TV shows you should tune into

I didn’t want to be a bad influence but…

Let’s face it: we’re all binge watching TV these days! Yesterday I shared some things that have kept me sane during quarantine but I gotta be honest, lounging on the couch while watching TV has been a favorite pastime as well. Here’s a list of shows that I’ve enjoyed that you must add to your list!

90 Day Fiance | Genre: Reality TV | Network: TLC

If you want a good laugh, tune into this show! I know you’ve at least heard about it if you’ve never watched; everyone on social media is talking about it. It must be entertaining if I’m able to get my fiance to watch because he doesn’t normally watch reality TV. There are a few different versions under the franchise but essentially two people from different countries fall in love with each other and are trying to get married. Apparently it’s not the easiest thing to up and move to a different country, get married and live happily ever after. Each country has its own regulations regarding marriage which is only part of the battle. Insert cultural differences and the opinions of family and friends and you’ve got yourself a mess. Each couple takes you on a wild, hysterical ride and I have become addicted.

All American | Genre: Drama | Network: CW and Netflix

Spencer, a high school star football player from Crenshaw gets the opportunity to play for Beverly Hills after being recruited by their coach. What seems like a straight forward scenario ends up being so much more. As Spencer tries to navigate in a world of lavish homes and expensive cars, he begins to uncover a lot of secrets about things in his life that he thought he had the answers to. What I enjoy most about this show is the exposure of duality that most black people have to deal with. We often have to code switch when we go to school or work, especially when our counterparts are white. Seeing Spencer deal with life in two different spaces gives the audience a peek into our realities. It’s also very juicy as we uncover all sorts of drama along the way!

Dead to Me | Genre: Dark Comedy | Network: Netflix

Now this show right here caught me by surprise. There is a big twist that occurred that I was NOT expecting. A woman’s husband dies from a hit and run accident and she is eager for the police to figure out who did. She has quite a temper which unfolds as we get to know more about her character. After her husband’s death she joins a grief group and befriends a woman that is not who she seems to be. That’s all I’m going to say; you’ve go to watch it for yourself before I say too much!

High Town | Genre: Crime Drama | Network: STARZ

This is a new show that aired back in May and I’m hoping there is a second season. After the body of a young woman washes ashore following a night of partying and sex, Jackie becomes obsessed with solving the crime herself. Her profession is a National Marine Fisheries officer and she will often remind us that she’s a “law enforcement officer” as if that gives her enough credibility to solve a murder (insert eye roll lol). If you haven’t already put two and two together from the title, Jackie definitely suffers from alcohol and drug addiction although she lives in denial. A lot of the characters are connected in ways they don’t even know surrounding the death of this young woman, and even though Jackie is a hot mess, she does a good job putting all of the pieces together. Brief disclaimer: the title sequence is awful!

The Last Kingdom | Genre: British Historical Fiction | Network: Netflix

If Game of Thrones was your jam, you’ll definitely enjoy this television series. Utred, son of Utred (you’ll understand that if you watch it) goes on a long journey to reclaim the land that rightfully belongs to him. And when I say long, I mean LONG! He has no army so he goes on a quest to find one. He ends up swearing his sword to a king and fighting battles on his behalf. No matter how hard Utred tries to break away, he finds himself being needed to win a war. He’s pretty much a badass so you want him on your team. Utred also fights to figure out where he fits in. He was born a Saxon but was taken in by the Danes so he experienced both worlds. Utred proves his loyalty time and time again but is often doubted by both sides. If you love action and a fight for power, you’re in for a treat!

Ozark | Genre: Crime Drama | Network: Netflix

In a nutshell, a financial advisor gets himself caught in some drama and takes his family on a WILD ride. I’m talking uproot and move to an entirely new city kind of ride. What had happened was… Marty became a money launderer for a Mexican drug cartel along with his business partner. The cartel finds out somebody is a snitch and Marty talks his way out of being killed. He convinces his boss that he can launder even more money if he moves to the Missouri Ozarks; I’m talking selling him a big dream. His boss decides to make him prove himself and that is only the beginning.

A few other shows worth mentioning:

I probably shouldn’t ask but I’d love to know what you guys are watching so I can add it to my list!
