COLOR THEORY AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE USING IT

Color theory has been trending lately…

I’ve mainly seen it trending in beauty where people are creating the perfect shade of foundation or even creating custom contour and blush colors. It got me thinking how color theory is also used in fashion and style as well.

But let’s take a quick step back so I can explain what color theory is, in case you don’t know.

Color theory is a set of principles that help us understand how colors work together. They are guidelines that can be used to create different color combinations. The primary colors are red, blue and green. When certain combinations are mixed, they create secondary colors. From there, you get into complementary, analogous and even monochromatic colors. It can get very detailed so read this if you want to get into the nitty gritty.

Now we can get into all the reasons you should be utilizing color theory when building your wardrobe and creating outfits. It’s truly a game changer and will keep your outfit combinations endless!

Creates A Colorful Closet

Nothing is more exciting than a closet full of color! You can be sure your outfits won’t lack versatility when you have a rainbow to choose from. Your style is an extension of your personality and color will help you articulate it without having to say a word

Makes You Aware of Gaps in Your Wardrobe

When utilizing color theory, there are certain principles to follow regarding how colors work with one another. Purple is a complementary color to yellow. Wearing a monochromatic look requires different pieces of clothing in the same color, or various shades, to accomplish that color scheme. Using the color wheel, as a tool, would help you identify if you were missing any colors when executing one of the theories.

Gives You New Ideas

While it’s great to develop your signature style, it’s also nice to switch things up every now and then. I used the color wheel to put some outfits together and created looks I never would’ve thought to do. It got me excited and gave me a fresh perspective on the clothes I already own. I realized I can continue to make something new from what’s already in my closet.

While I am aware of what colors typically work well together, I’ve never used the color wheel as a true guide when creating outfits. Moving forward, I plan to implement these theories into practice regularly. It was so much fun to do and easy to follow because the principles make it clear what formulas work best.

I hope you’ll give it a try as well!
